Book Review – The Grass is Singing

The Grass is Singing by DorisĀ Lessing

I got this for my birthday, I think it’s the first time I’ve read a Nobel prize winner so close after their winning. I had no idea what to expect from this book, which was very exciting.

The book was very interesting. It wasn’t written in a difficult language, it was rather easy to follow (I always have prejudices about the language of Nobel prize winners). The story was really interesting, even though not much happened but it was interesting to see the life in apartheid South Africa, how the whites treated each other and how they treated the natives.

The main character is complex andĀ I felt for her throughout the book, even though she put herself in the situations. Then there were the times when I really couldn’t stand her since she really was acting like a bitch. The outside world and peer pressure made her make decisions she didn’t really want to, but she was the one to live with the consequences.

It really was a great read, out of different perspectives; both historical and psychological. I really recommend it.

PLOT: The book starts with a murder. The murder of Mary Turner. How did she end up in this situation? That’s what the rest of the book explains.
